Ph.D. ADMISSIONS GUIDELINES
Only students interested in working toward the Ph.D. in Education will be admitted to the program. The minimum grade-point average (GPA) established by the University of California for admission to graduate school is 3.0. In general, the Ph.D. in Education program looks for potential excellence in graduate students, whether this manifests itself in a high grade-point average, strong letters of recommendation, or a high Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores, or a strong statement of purpose. Applicants will be evaluated on their individual merits and also with regard to how well their proposed doctoral projects can be supported by the existing resources of the program.

Applicants are notified by the UCSC Division of Graduate Studies via email as to whether or not they have been admitted. University policy does not permit the department to give out any information via phone, e-mail, or fax regarding which applicants have been selected. Please wait for notification from the UCSC Divisions of Graduate Studies.
Ph.D. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
- Have received a bachelor's degree or its equivalent from an accepted university prior to the quarter for which admission is sought
- Have a grade point average, or equivalent, of 3.0 or better
- Submit scores on the GRE Graduate Records Exam (GRE) taken within the past five years
- Have experience working with culturally and linguistically diverse communities
PREFERRED COURSEWORK AND EXPERIENCE PRIOR TO ADMISSION TO THE PROGRAM
- K-12 classroom experience
PREFERRED PREREQUISITES FOR MATHEMATICS AND SCIENCE EDUCATION SPECIALIZATION
- B.S. or B.A. degree in a mathematical or natural science discipline (mathematics, applied mathematics, biology, chemistry, computer science, physics, etc.) or equivalent upper division course work.
ADVICE FOR PREPARING A STRONG APPLICATION
- Please focus your application materials so that you convey a clear sense of: 1) the strength of your preparation to pursue scholarly inquiry; 2) the connection between your scholarly interests and social justice; 3) your short and long-term career goals; and, 4) the fit between your interests and goals and our program and faculty.
- If possible, please select a writing sample that demonstrates your strengths in academic writing and scholarship.
- In the aggregate, your letters of recommendation should speak to your academic abilities and potential as a scholar.
- During the preparation of the application, you are encouraged to make direct contact via email with faculty whose research interests you to explore the fit between your own interests and the program.
PHD APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS
Applying on line: Applications are available ONLY online through the UCSC Division of Graduate Studies (http://graddiv.ucsc.edu/splash/). Please visit the Division of Graduate Studies for information on the application process. The Ph.D. in Education applications are due on December 15th each year.
To be considered for admission application packets must include:
- The UCSC Graduate Application for Admission (which includes a Statement of Purpose and a Personal History Statement).
- A current resume.
- Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended after high school. (These should be in sealed envelopes with the registrar's stamp on the outside of the seal and mailed to UCSC Division of Graduate Studies).
- Three letters of recommendation (online recommendations will only be accepted).
- Official Graduate Record Examination (GRE) general test scores (taken within the last 5 years), which are to be directed to the UCSC Division of Graduate Studies. UCSC's school code is 4860. UCSC must receive the scores by the application deadline.
- A writing sample, preferably in education or a related field. The sample can be a term paper, a field report, a research proposal, or an essay written especially for the application (the Graduate Application provides a section where the applicant attaches his/her writing sample).
- International applicants must take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). A minimum score of 550 on the TOEFL (paper) or 220 on the TOEFL (computer) is required for admission. The TOEFL exam may be waived for international students who have taken and successfully passed a freshman composition course at an accredited university in the United States.

- Experience in and/or commitment to under served schools and communities
- Research area of interest
