Research Focus 
Dr. Shaw's research addresses science teaching and learning for culturally and linguistically diverse students. His current work focuses on the assessment of science inquiry skills and the analysis of the linguistic demands inherent in science assessments. He is particularly interested in the use of performance assessment in science inquiry learning contexts for diverse students, especially English Learners. His expertise includes the development of performance assessments and scoring rubrics as well as the analysis of student scores. Prior to joining the UCSC faculty, Dr. Shaw provided technical assistance to several K-12 science education reform initiatives across the US in the areas of curriculum, instruction, and assessment. He has over ten years experience as a classroom teacher, both mainstream and bilingual (Spanish-English), in K-12 California public schools. Dr. Shaw has been recognized by prominent organizations as both an outstanding practitioner and researcher.
