Biography, Education and Training

Soleste Hilberg is the Director for the Teacher Education MA/Credential Program at UCSC. She has dedicated her career to equity for traditionally under-served student groups. She has three degrees from UCSC: an M.A. in Education Research (1998), an M.S. in Computer Engineering from the Baskin School of Engineering (2005) and a Ph.D. in Education (2012). Her B.S. is in mathematics and computer science. She also has teaching and administrative services credentials. She has served as a teacher of mathematics and a school administrator in a number of capacities including Assistant Superintendent of Educational Services, Director of Curriculum, Instruction & Accountability, and Coordinator of Assessment. She has also served in higher education for over a decade. At UC Berkeley Center for Research on Education, Diversity and Excellence she was a senior research analyst and project manager. At SRI International Center for Technology in Learning she was an Institutional Partnership Manager, Program Manager and was Principal Investigator of a Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation grant. At UCSC, Dr. Hilberg was a research specialist and managed a number of research projects for the Center for Research on Education, Diversity & Excellence. She loves the challenge of large, open-ended tasks, creating structures and processes to ensure their implementation, sustaining initiative and self-direction through their completion, and developing the necessary collaborations, systems, and supports to ensure their success, including ongoing monitoring and evaluation.
